  • What is Chanukah?

  • Chanukah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday that celebrates the victory of a small group of Jewish fighters over a powerful army and the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem over 2,000 years ago.

The most famous part of the story is the miracle of the oil: When the Jewish people reclaimed the Temple, they found only enough pure oil to light the menorah (a special lamp) for one day. Amazingly, the oil burned for eight days – enough time to prepare more oil.

Today, we celebrate by lighting the menorah each night for eight nights, enjoying festive foods like latkes (potato pancakes) and doughnuts, and spending time with family and friends. It's a time to remember the power of faith, hope, and perseverance.
